Free Desktop Publishing with Scribus Print

Scribus is a free, open source, destop publishing program, or DTP. You may have heard of or be familiar with other DTP programs such as Framemaker or QuarkXpress.

Although Scribus is easy enough for a beginner to genrate newsletters, brochures, cards and much more, it is also well suited to the needs of the professional.

Scribus brings professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, OS/2 and Windows.Scribus supports professional features, such as CMYK color, spot color, separations, ICC color and robust commercial grade PDF.

Installation Notes

Installing Scribus is easy, but just in case you miss it on the website there is one additional package needed before you can use the all its features. You should install GhostScript (version 8.60 at the time of writing this). You can use Scribus without this package, but it is needed for Postscript (PS) and Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) importing and printing. If you start Scribus without Ghostscript, you get a nice warning message about what you are missing by not having it.

Download Ghostscript from: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1897&package_id=108733 - if you are using Windows choose the .exe (32-bit windows) file to download.

After you have downloaded the file, install it, and then start Scribus.

Getting Help

There is a very good Manual built in to Scribus that you can access from the Help menu in the program.

If you need more help there are plenty of places you can turn to. The Scribus website itself is your best starting place, with the Support link offering a large amount of information on all aspects of Scribus.
